IPC 7711-21 Training For Instructors

IPC 7711/7721 Certified IPC Trainer (CIT) course is built on the IPC train-the-trainer model. In this system of instruction, there are 3 tiers of certification. At the highest level and able to train both the lower level instructors as well as the applications specialists, is the master instructor or MIT. MIT’s are employees of training centers or industry consultants working under a site license. These master instructors have a rich background in the electronics industry or in teaching. In the case of the IPC-7711/21 instructor training program, the master instructors are those with the most hands-on experience in soldering. PCB repair and PCB rework. This is required as rework/repair technicians have some of the most challenging work on a modern electronics manufacturing or repair area. The applications specialists or CIS holders are those skilled technicians working in the repair shop or as rework operators. CSEs are subject matter experts in PCB rework and repair having input into further developing the specification. More on the IPC rework and repair certification training here.

Upon completion of the IPC-7711/21 instructor course, trainers will know the technical guidelines of IPC-7711/21 and will have demonstrated the skills required to perform both rework and repair of printed circuit boards in accordance with the procedures outlined in the IPC 7711/21 standard. These instructors will then be formally recognized by the IPC as having the credentials to teach CIS candidates. Once these IPC 7711/21 instructors are certified they can take various elements of the training program into their respective companies in order adapt the program for their company’s specific requirements.

There are several criteria which make for very good IPC 7711/21 instructors. They are enumerated below:

  • They will have excellent hand soldering skills. These are the top 2-3 soldering techs in a company or area with 20-30 soldering techs
  • They have the utmost in patience
  • They are able to communicate effectively in the English language and demonstrated proficiency in the English language at least at the 5th-grade level
  • They have demonstrated hand-eye coordination that allows them to work underneath a microscope with small pieces down to 0.002”
  • Trainers should also be very effective communicators and be willing to be patient with students

The IPC 7711/21 instructor class is an advanced PCB rework (removal and replacement of components) and PCB repair (physical repair of the printed circuit boards)

The IPC 7711/21 instructor train-the-trainer program teaches industry-approved techniques on SMT rework,through-hole rework and the physical repair of printed circuit boards. This program serves up a hands-on intensive, advanced skills training program along with teaching materials that enable a qualified personnel to teach this program further in your companies. The guideline document for the IPC 7711/21 instructor program is based on the IPC-7711/7721 Rework of Electronic Assemblies/Repair and Modification of Printed Boards and Electronic Assemblies specifications.

The IPC 7711/21 instructor certification program lasts for forty hours and is offers intensive, hands-on instruction. Candidates who pass the classroom exam, as well as the rework and repair skills demonstrations, are recognized by IPC as CITs.  They will, upon successful completion, leave with access to the lesson plan, visuals and materials for training certified IPC specialists on up to nine different assembly rework and repair modules. IPC-7711/7721 Instructor class offers this certification for a 2 year validity period.

The certified IPC 7711/21 certification course covers common rework and repair techniques. Once the instructors are certified the IPC CIS training for rework and repair is a modular course. Only the introductory module, Common Procedures, is a required part of the instruction. Other certified IPC specialist modules are taught based on a company’s needs. Certified IPC 7711/21 instructor and specialists are certified for two years for each module taken.
